WILDEBEEST - Bushrock 1 [South Africa psychedelic progressive folk 1981] 2000 Wildebeest Records WILD 022

Recorded live in 1981, Bushrock 1 is the sound of a truly African progressive rock band in full flight - thundering African percussion, hard rock guitars, swirling Celtic violin and soaring vocals all combine to form a heady musical brew. Wildebeest featured ex-Freedom's Children drummer Colin Pratley, bassist Piet Botha (now fronting Jack Hammer) and violinist Dave Tarr. Tracks include unique takes on Freedoms's The Kid He Came From Hazareth, Slowly From The North and Tribal fence. Sound quality is not very good.

Here you’ll find rare and unreleased early recordings by legendary mod band The Event. The Event were a unique band tagged as part of the 80’s mod revival though their sound had barely nothingto do with the powerpop sound that was usual among their colleagues but with British 60’s r&b and pop-art.Their only lp on Voxx remains as one of the most outstanding albums of the 80’s both for its quality and itsaudacity.

ROBIN WILLIAMSON & HIS MERRY BAND - Journey's Edge [UK folk, celtic, folk rock 1977] 2008 Fledg'ling fled3071

Journey's Edge is the second solo album by Scottish folk artist Robin Williamson and his Merry Band. The work was released in 1977, and re-released in 2008 by Fledg'ling Records with ten bonus tracks.

Journey's Edge was the beginning of a creative period for Williamson. It is the beginning of Williamson's interest with the harp, then played by Sylvia Woods, and ancient bardic poetry. These new interests would be increasingly evident in later albums and storytelling by Williamson. This is the first post Incredible String Band era album by Williamson. It is a mixture of folk, baroque, pop, and Celtic music. Tracks like "Border Tango" and "Red Eye Blues" deal with remembering and travel. It is not until the track "Tomorrow" that there is a sense with the future. Overall, there is a sense of emotional integrity expressed by Williamson in his vocals that give a deeper meaning to the lighthearted songs. Williamson masterfully prolonged syllables within the tracks that is reminiscent of his Incredible String Band days.

The Merry Band's exceptional musicianship aid in creating the style Williamson had desired in the past. He and the troupe would tour regularly in the mid-seventies. The addition of the Celtic style and acoustic ensemble would be a trademark of Williamson and The Merry Band on further works. "Likky Lambert", guesting on the album, is actually former String Band member Licorice McKechnie. Her final recording appearances are on the tracks "Tomorrow" and "The Bells".

LES SINNERS - La Révolution Française - Vol. 1 & 2 [Canada garage, psychedelic, rock 1967-75] 2001 Disques Mérite 22-960 / 1

A little history on the band known as Les Sinners: they started out in Quebec during the mid 60s and before Vox Populi released two garage pop albums in 1967, their half French/half English-sung debut Sinerisme was an excellent, defiant effort that combined rowdy fuzz rockers with attractive garage pop numbers. The similarly titled Sinnerismes followed the debut album and while not as strong as the aforementioned record, it was still a respectable slab of garage pop. Vox Populi or “voices of the people” was the group’s highwater mark, a superb concept lp centered around life and people’s attitudes toward everyday situations.

Les Sinners would go on to release another album or two during the progressive rock era though none of them matched the greatness of the debut or the legendary Vox Populi.

CHARGE - Charge [UK hard psychedelic 1974] 2019 Sommor SOMM051

Charge were a British power–trio born from the ashes of local South Coast heavy–blues bands Baby Bertha and Sweet Poison. Comprised of Dave Ellis (guitar), Pete Gibbons (drums) and Ian Mclaughlin (bass), they played heavy rock influenced by Hendrix, Cream, Free, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, etc.

In 1973 they cut a demo album at SRT studios of which 99 copies in blank covers were pressed and later distributed between family & friends, with a few of them also shipped to record companies in what proved to be an unsuccessful attempt at earning a recording contract.

The music is raw hard–rock with unrestrained guitar, Lemmy–esque vocals and psych / heavy progressive touches.

THE SCENICS - Sunshine World - Studio Recordings 1977-78 [Canada punk rock 1977-78] 2009 Dream Tower Records DT04

They were a band that came together in the early Toronto punk/new wave scene, fronted by dual excellent singer-songwriters, and became a great band that was even more underground than the others there at that time. This legendary anthology includes fan-favorites “Do The Wait,” “O Boy,” “Wild Trout,” “I Killed Marx” and the title track.

“Largely unappreciated when they originally existed between 1976-1981, these underground icons merged Television’s guitar work, Big Star’s pop prowess, Pere Ubu’s dementia, and The Ramones’ urgency.” Jonathan Cummins, Montreal Mirror

CIRCUIT RIDER - Photograph Attached [USA psychedelic rock] 2006 Numero Group NUM1255

Beneath the shroud of mystery surrounding the Circuit Rider LP is its mercurial, difficult, and wildly creative producer, Thorn Oehrig. After turning his penchant for biker lore into an acid-scorched eponymous LP, he continued recording with a motley cast of musicians and collaborators over the next few years, plotting a follow-up that was never quite completed. The original buzz remains across this unheard blast of angel dust. Dark hobo tales and rambling tunes, etched in alternately noisy, shambolic, and transcendent performances, channeling an alternate reality where Tom Waits is a mass murderer.

ISAIAH - Isaiah [Austria progressive rock 1975] 2014 Digatone DIG 002 CD, Album, Enhanced, Reissue

Isaiah's only album (1975) features a mix of jazz, blues and progressive rock elements. Led by the charismatic voice of flautist and guitarist Gert Raabe, the band counts as one of Austria's most versatile bands of the 1970s, often likened to Jethro Tull, Yes and ELP. The band disbanded in 1977.
