THE AMPEX - The Ampex [Colombia garage, beat 1967] 2021 Munster Records MR 414

Self-titled album, originally released in 1967. The Ampex quickly built a large fanbase in their native Colombia after releasing a four-song EP and a full album on the label Estudio 15. They were also in-demand musicians that local pop stars would hire for both live shows and recording sessions. Although it may look like these young rockers had a promising future ahead, the beat sound went out of fashion in Colombia and the members of the band realized their project had come to an end. Before disbanded (and two of their members would join The Time Machine), The Ampex recorded a self-titled album that was released on Discos Fuentes. Although the label was mostly focused on tropical sounds, Fuentes also welcomed the emerging rock n' roll sounds of the time and had already released a rock compilation in 1966, obtaining substantial sales figures. This elusive gem of Colombian garage contains some raw and powerful takes on the repertoire of their beloved The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Hunters, The Easybeats, The Yardbirds, The Executives, The Lovin' Spoonful, and The Wailers, often sung in a shameless attempt to translate the original lyrics to Spanish.

THE VANDALS - I Saw Her in a Mustang [USA garage rock 1965-66] 2021 BeatRocket 163

Florida garage punk that could have been massive if their single wasn’t banned from so many stations. Finally The Vandals get a retrospective, complete with their snowflake melting “Mustang,” three more studio nuggs and loads of live takes of their interpretations of The Kinks, The Knickerbockers, a batch of Beatles, and more!

The Vandals originated in Hollywood, Florida in 1964, the same year that saw The British Invasion kick into high gear, the price of a Coke and a hot dog was 49 cents, and the Ford Mustang was born. Several original songs distinguished The Vandals from the plethora of local groups at the time, and the risqué “I Saw Her In A Mustang” was the catalyst that created a huge South Florida following for the group. Sadly it was the incendiary title track’s racy lyrical content that likely kept the band from blowing up. Against these odds, The Vandals made an unmistakable mark on the 60s garage scene with a handful of rare singles and raucous live performances.

GOMA - 14 Abril [España progressive rock 1975] 2003 Fonomusic 5046703342

One of the better example of Spanish prog, the debut of this Sevillian group has become one of the most sought after vinyl in their home country. This quintet - your standard prog quartet plus sax man Pepe Sanchez - develops a rather punchy and relatively personal prog but mainly inspired of the British scene while maintaining a Spanish touch through the acoustic guitar. Four long tracks of which the shortest (still above the 8 min-mark) is divided into two sections make the backbone of this symphonic album.

The opening track is sometimes annoying with its approximate recording of a VDGG- like sax and vocals (too loud in the mix), but there are some beautiful moments. From the first guitar arpeggios of the 2-part Mother Earth track, this is all forgotten and all you have to do is let yourself be transported by the calm and wild ambiances - how these guys come from total chaos into superb arpeggios in twenty seconds without being abrupt is amazing. The third track is much harder rocking with its crunchy guitar power chords, but remains very charming. Unfortunately for the continuity of the album, the last track is sung in English (all the rest were in Spanish), but there are some evidences of very early Crimson in its slow start. The track is rather odd with its fade-ins and outs, but shows Goma at their most adventurous.

With their first album, Goma strike a minor masterpiece, but for some reason, will not be able to capitalize on this album, and by the time that came out the second album four years after, the feeling was quite different and the momentum lost. However, this album is really recommended for all progheads, maybe one of the top 10 from Spain.

SHAKER'S - In The Studio Again [Uruguay pop, psychedelic 1971] 2020 Guerssen GUESS163

Originally released in 1971 (only in Brazil and Argentine) under the SHAKER’S name, (an idea / imposition of the record label / producer) In The Studio Again was in fact recorded by THE INNOCENTS, an Uruguayan band featuring Roberto "Pelin" Capobianco and Carlos "Caio" Vila from LOS SHAKERS plus Héctor and Carlos Capobianco (Pelin’s twin brothers) and Rubén ‘Lorenzo’ Viela. These top musicians recorded in Brazil a wonderful album full of catchy songs, vocal harmonies, superb arrangements and Beatlesque / baroque-pop / proto power-pop vibes.
