THE REACTION - Shapes Of Things To Come [UK mod, freak-beat 1985-87] 2018 Bristol Archive Records ARC322CD

Bristol based The Reaction were formed in the mid 1980s greatly influenced by the music and dress of the 60s, a combination that appealed to many of the Mod Revivalists of the day. With the young Mods enthusiastic support, The Reaction were quickly riding high on a wave of popularity and independent record sales. Everyone that either heard the band or were lucky enough to see their live set, were left with no doubt the band were destined for a brighter future than many of their peers. Even though they managed to gain much coveted Radio 1 airplay from the likes of John Peel and Andy Kershaw, and the backing of the Waterloo Sunset Records, their popularity was never properly harnessed. Within three years they were gone, but not thankfully without leaving behind the tracks that are now available on this album.

For the many fans of 1960s music, we are sure this retrospective album by The Reaction will come as something of a surprise. Very rarely do you come across a band that has managed so successfully to recreate the unique electric 12 string sound of the 60s American West Coast. With seven original well crafted, self penned songs, and four cover versions once performed by the likes of The Yardbirds, The Creation, The Beatles and The Byrds, the new album ‘Shapes of Things To Come’ can sit very confidently along side any other album from that era.

MODIFICACIÓN - Modificación [España freak beat, rock, progressive 1971-74] 2020 Munster Records MR 408

The group Modificación is a prime example of what '70s underground and prog rock meant on the Valencia scene. Bands encountered a series of obstacles when making their much freer and more versatile music, which was demanded by the international planet rock. These hurdles varied from the serious difficulty of recording modern and innovative records, impositions by the record label and frequent desertion by band members to pursue interests that were more professional than artistic. The group's origins date back to early 1969, in Valencia's Ruzafa neighbourhood, with an average age of around 16 among its founding members. They adopted the name Modificación, an intriguing name that flagged up their creative intentions and interest in underground sounds, under the influence of bands like Grand Funk Railroad, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, Rare Earth, Led Zeppelin... While the bulk of the Valencia rock scene revolved around modest groups making commercial music for dance halls, mostly versions of contemporary hits, they wrote their own songs from day one and set the bar high with daily rehearsals, aiming to perform to perfection. The band's luck seemed to change at a show with the Catalan group Lone Star. Pedro Gené (leader and vocalist of Lone Star) suggested Modificación record a single for the biggest record label in Spain: EMI. "Llegará el día que me quieras" (1971) was a major debut that also brought the arrival of a new vocalist, Juan Bau. Modificación's second record adventure was with the small Madrid label La Corrida in 1972, set up by Félix Arribas and Juan Jiménez, members of the famous Spanish band Los Pekenikes. They would release a couple of singles recorded at the Audiofilm studios in Madrid under the influence of glam, Californian and soft-rock style, international trends at the time. The now legendary freakbeat number "Across The Time" was crafted during these sessions and has become one of the most admired and sought-after singles of Spanish music. This LP brings together all the songs comprised in their three published singles as well as the remaining unreleased recordings from those 1972 sessions in Madrid. An accomplished portrait of one of the most legendary Spanish underground bands from that period whose fans, unable to find the elusive -and now very expensive records, were crying out for an urgent reissue of their work.

THE MISUNDERSTOOD - Children Of The Sun (The Complete Recordings 1965-1966) [USA/UK garage, freak-beat, psychedelic] 2021 Grapefruit Records CRSEG086D

US/UK-Freak-beat/Psychedelic band. They started under the name "The Blue Notes" in Riverside, California in late 1963, playing Surf music. After a little come and go, they finally completed their line-up in 1965 and also changed the band name to "The Misunderstood".
It was during one of their live perfomances, when they happen to meet english DJ John Ravenscroft, alias John Peel, who was hooked and began to act as their mentor. It was probably his suggestion that "The Misunderstood" headed London in 1966, where they due to some help of John Peels brother Alan, manage to get a deal with Fontana Records. Their style now ranges from progressive Blues to Psychedelic (especially live).

But in London the trouble started. Forced by drug problems of two members and an army draft of one, the band line-up was changing several times, until the final split just a few month later, in early 1967.

MILES OVER MATTER - The Vagabonds Of Psychedelia (The Anthology 1980-1982) [UK freak beat, psychedelia 1980-82] 2015 Paisley Archive PA037

Between 1980 and 1983 M.O.M were the premier band in London's new Psychedelic scene. Their wild and wonderful reinvention of the 60's British Pop/Rock musical style wouldn't be echoed again until almost a decade later with the Manchester bands.

Something was happening and for those that were there it was powerful "...the excitement I felt back then when everything was ahead. When Miles Over Matter took to the stage and proclaimed: “Something’s Happening Here!” I believed them" Mark Nevin of Fairground Attraction.

Featuring 12 previously unreleased studio tracks as well as 6 live cuts, plus Something’s Happening Here and Park My Car (from the psychedelic compilation A Splash Of Colour, released in 1982).

THE ACTION - Rolled Gold [UK freak beat, psychedelic 1967-68] 2018 Guerssen GUESS153

The legendary 1967–68 recordings by UK mod band THE ACTION, registered when they were in transition from mod–beat to full–blown psychedelia, just prior to becoming MIGHTY BABY.

Originally recorded as a set of demos with the intention of obtaining an album deal which inexplicably never materialized, "Rolled Gold" is a collection of brilliant songs, melancholic yet powerful. The Action’s classic line–up of Reg King, Alan ’Bam’ King, Michael Evans and Roger Powell is augmented with the inclusion of new members Martin Stone on guitar and Ian Whiteman on flute / organ. All of them are playing their hearts out: superb harmonies, great guitar work and clever arrangements which show the influence of bands like The Byrds and the psychedelic sounds that were coming from the West Coast and UK as well as jazz giants like Coltrane.
