ZOOM - Sweet Desperation [Canada garage, rock, punk 1977] 2016 Ugly Pop Records UP061

ZOOM formed in Toronto in 1976, going on to release (arguably) the city’s first punk 45 before parting ways and joining The Viletones and The Diodes. The duo tracked their material anyway, culminating in this blistering, 13-track masterpiece.

RJ & THE RIOTS - RJ And The Riots [Philippines garage beat 1964] 2022 Guerssen GUESS204

Led by teen guitar wizard Ramon “RJ” Jacinto, RJ & THE RIOTS was one of the first rock&roll /beat bands from the Philippines and certainly the first to release original rock n’ roll songs with lyrics in their own country.

This is the first ever reissue of their second album, originally released in 1964 and now impossible to find (four stars rating in Hans Pokora’s 1001 Record Collector Dreams book). Including original songs like the monster instrumental “Fuzzed”, the garage sounding “Advertising Man”, “Girl Nice”, the surf rock of “Trip To Manila” and more plus a few rad covers (Beach Boys, Buddy Holly…). The album was recorded at the home studio built by whizz kid Ramón Jacinto, who also operated his own record label (RJ Productions), magazine (Teenstone) and radio station (from his parent’s backyard!).

VVAA - Ork Records New York, New York [USA punk rock 2015] Numero Group NUM060

In August of 1975, the world’s first punk record label was born. Ork Records: New York, New York is a tale of Terry Ork, a film-obsessed fugitive of Warhol’s Factory set. Ork’s impresario ear would pull damaged, literate new rock music from the pregnant Bowery grime of CBGB, resulting in debut 45s by Television and Richard Hell, as well as landmark recordings by the Feelies and Lester Bangs. It’s a tale of Charles Ball, who’d steer Ork Records through solo exploits by Big Star’s Alex Chilton and the dBs’ Chris Stamey. And it’s a tale told in scorching sides by Richard Lloyd, Marbles, Prix, Mick Farren, Cheetah Chrome, the Idols, the Erasers, the Revelons, Student Teachers, and more.

STEVE STARLUST - Lostnfound [USA galm rock 1977-80] 2023 Reminder Records REM 20

1970s-1980s Long Island, NY proto-punk / glam vocalist and guitarist. Fronted Starlust AKA The Steve Starlust Band, and later The Grapplers, a wrestling-themed group with the same members minus the guitarist who was replaced by Brian Unger. Each band only released one 7" single, although a Starlust LP recorded for Capital (USA) / EMI (England) was never released due to a financial dispute between the labels and the group's manager. Both groups performed in NYC and the Grapplers toured the east coast of the USA.

RANDY & THE GOATS - On The Lam [USA psychedelic soft rock 1981] 2023 Riding Easy - digital file

Released on the small Broken Records label, "On the Lam" was one of those early-1980s releases that sported a distinctive mid-1970s sound.

There is a proto-punk / pre-grunge DIY edge here but at it's core we have a singer- songwriter character who evokes Reed, Dylan, Johnny Thunders even.
