THE CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND - This Is My Voice [USA garage rock 2018] Dirty Water CWB1

It’s over fifty years since The Chocolate Watchband first emerged from the counter-culture movement on the west coast of the US. Since then so much has changed, but yet so little. On their new record, they cast a critical light over the continued decline of a society ruled by elites, an iron heel held over the masses, while we whip ourselves into frenzied anger at each other, shouting into the abyss of the internet. And of course, being the Watchband, there are some choice cover versions as well to complement their original material.

Lead single, Secret Rendezvous opens the album with a fuzzed guitar riff that introduces a grooving bluesy romp, complete with horns and pounding rhythms. It’s a link between their previous sound and the styles that they influenced through the decades, coming out not far from the driving style of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. It’s a strong opener, marking that they are back with a renewed fervour and are not going to be content to simply rehash their classics.

Second single, Judgement Day follows, dropping back on a psych-blues motif replete with a gentle sitar riff that flows under a spurting harmonica. The song slowly rises up, telling the common tale of a let-go worker drifting in his thoughts of how to provide while cursing at the ineptitude of those who lead and the greed of those who suck and drain the spirit of the masses. There’s a growing anger within the song as it goes along. The guitar solo drops in like an Oasis classic, again making that link between their past and their impact.

It’s clear that in the lyrics, singer David Aguilar has focused on much of what he sees around himself, the inequality covered in the opening songs, while the title track, This Is My Voice, through its drifting psychedelia, focuses on the multitude of voices rising up. The song perfectly balances the oxymoronic ability we have nowadays to make ourselves heard with the idea that we are shouting into an abyss and straining to make our voices rise up above the parapet. His lyrics are poignant, yet cutting and critical at the same time and a great reflection of the modern age.

THE HYPSTRZ - Live At The Longhorn [USA garage 1979-2004] 2005 Bomp! BCD 4092-2

Most cover bands don't get much respect, but Minneapolis' Hypstrz were one band who turned their lack of original material into a virtue. In 1976, when punk rock was just beginning to stagger to its feet and the garage rock revival was a few years down the road, the Hypstrz were playing classic rock & roll and R&B tunes from the likes of the Chocolate Watch Band, the Small Faces, the 13th Floor Elevators, Syndicate of Sound, and Wilson Pickett and making them roar like a big block Dodge with a full tank of high test. While leaders Ernest Batson and Bill Batson occasionally wrote an original number, they seemed to work under the (not unreasonable) theory that most of the best tunes were already out there, and they played 'em without a hint of nostalgia -- the Hypstrz weren't an oldies band or Nehru- and fuzztone-obsessed garage archivists, but guys who dug great rock & roll, and were determined to keep one particular strain of it alive and kicking (with the emphasis on "kicking"). In April 1979, the Hypstrz recorded a weekend's worth of shows at the Minneapolis rock club Jay's Longhorn, and a few months later four songs from those shows appeared on a 7" EP, while another 15 tunes were released on the 1981 album Hypstrization. Now, those 19 performances have been released on CD with 15 other tracks recorded that same weekend as Live at the Longhorn, and the result is 79 minutes of high-energy rock & roll, played with heart, soul, joy, and fierce attitude; maybe the guys in the band only wrote four of the 37 songs crammed onto this disc, but anyone who digs music that's tough, passionate, and muscular will listen to this music and wish he was standing in front of the stage, beverage in hand and shaking it out. Three songs from a 2004 performance by the latest lineup of the Hypstrz fill out the package, and prove the Batson brothers can still kick out the jams a quarter-century after the rest of the set was recorded. If every "bar band" were as good as the Hypstrz, maybe there wouldn't be a need for acts any bigger; at very least, it's hard to imagine most other bands delivering as much fun as there is to be had on Live at the Longhorn.

KUBLA KHAN - Mystic Crystal Revolution [USA rock 1970] 1995 Collectables COL-0654

Kubla Khan's complete output, a generally hard-rocking and intense body of work ranging from Santana-like guitar pyrotechnics to power-chord dominated anthems like "Revolution," and the occasional psychedelic or folkish digressions. Chris Gerniottis's singing and rhythm guitar work are always interesting, even where the material is predictable, and when the group is really on target, Jeff Burke's lead guitar and Mike Gregory's organ add their own layers of invention and intensity. Not every song is worthwhile, but the stuff that is more than justifies the purchase of this CD. In contrast to many garage band releases in this series from Collectables, the work by Kubla Khan is professionally recorded and requires no apologies or explanations for its quality.

THE TOUCH - Lost Touch [UK mod revival 1980] 2018 Paisley Archive PA055

The majority of you who is reading this press release will be saying...."THE TOUCH?.... NEVER HEARD OF THEM!"

Well, that is not strictly true as they were bang into the Mod Scene back in 1979 and played all the regular haunts along side all the well known bands of the time and even had an album released in 1980 BUT for reasons unknown to the band, their label at the time released it under name of THE MODS. Their album "Lost Touch" has now become a true rarity as it is such a great long lost album and was even bootlegged in the 90s on clear vinyl and more recently seen a CD bootleg copy of it appear!

Over the years, this band was a true mystery and no one could find any info on the band even though we knew they were from the Portebello Road area....

It was later covered by Boney M in 1979, and reached the No. 10 position in the UK chart.

REVIVAL - Revival [USA rock, country rock 1972] Kama Sutra KSBS 2047

An ambitious though awkward country-rock outing from a group with clear folkie roots. The liner notes detail how the core duo of singers Dan Daley and Michelle Conway played a bunch of "hoots" in the NYC folk scene, and later picked up a backing band that gave them more opportunity to branch out musically. They harmonize nicely, particularly when he takes the lead with his enthusiastic (and pleasantly dorky) vocals, hitting sort of a Gram Parsons-like vibe; when Conway sings lead, she inevitably leaps into a too-serious, Joan Baez-ian folkie warble, undercutting the country feel that Daley was building up. There's a spiritual-religious undercurrent to some of the songs, though many just seem like spaced-out, word-salad hippie-druggie stuff, which often takes on a quasi-religious tone, just because that's what sometimes happens when you realize you have hands and could fly the spaceship on your own. Musically, the rest of the band is kind of iffy -- the rhythm section is pretty stiff -- but there's some noteworthy pedal steel from Hank DeVito (later a key member of the Emmylou Harris band) and nice fiddling by Larry Packer, of the Cat Mother band. This album isn't really a classic, but it is a nice, authentic slice of early, hippiedelic country-folk. This was the first album featuring Dan Daley, who later struck gold as a songwriter, penning the Charlie Daniels Band hit, "Still In Saigon," a decade later.

THE HEARTBEATS - Forever [UK mod revival, power pop 1979-82] 2011 Paisley Archive PA003

The Heartbeats- Forever CD. Cool little reissue here from the Paisley Archive series. The Heartbeats are a band from the the UK who were very active from 1979 - 1982. They had many labels interested in them at the time including Arista, Virgin, London, Polydor and Magnet and some of them even paid the band to record songs for their labels. But they’re just one of the bands from that era that seemed to slip through the cracks. For various reasons including the labels not being totally satisfied with what the band recorded and their plates being full with other bands/projects most of those recordings never offiicially saw the light of day. Many magazines and fanzines at the time were talking them up as ‘ Pops answer to Talk Talk’, ‘the Buzzcocks with better harmonies’ and ‘the Small Faces for the 80’s’ and there were even numberous producers photographers and stylists that were all brought in to launch their career. But after all the time and effort put into the band they just never really took off. Paul Weller from The Jam even lauded them as one of the great lost bands of that era. This CD compiles 21 of the songs they recorded for various labels that were never released and also includes the two songs from their first and only 7” that was ever oficially relesed called ‘Go’. 21 songs in all. Fans of The Who, The Kinks ,The Purple Hearts and The Belle Stars will dig.

MAGIC - Magic [USA psychedelic rock 1971 Rare Earth R527L] 2010 Big Pink BIG PINK 644

Guitarist Duane King and his brother, bassist Nick, joined the Lansing, Michigan band the Next Exit in 1968. The rest of the band included Gary Harger on drums, Mike Motz on lead guitar, and organist Clyde Hamilton. After a name change to Magic and a single on their own label in early 1969, Hamilton left the band, and Motz was replaced by Joey Murcia, a Miami native who had played with that city's Birdwatchers. Murcia, as it happened, was a session player for TK Records in Miami and assured the band he could get them a record deal, so Magic packed up everything and moved to Miami. TK Records had an entirely black R&B roster at the time, but Magic, who often covered R&B songs, fit right in, becoming the label's first white signee. They recorded their first LP, Enclosed, in the summer of 1969, which was officially released on their own Armadillo label. The summer of 1970 found Magic returning to Lansing in search of a major-label contract. A Detroit producer, Scott Regan, helped to get the band signed to the Motown-owned Rare Earth label, and, in 1971, Magic began recording their second album. The self-titled album was released in 1971 to favorable reviews and featured Stevie Wonder playing keyboards on several songs, but not long after the album's release, Motown moved to California, closing down Rare Earth and leaving Magic without a label. They recorded some demos in the hopes of landing another record deal, but the band never recovered from the Motown move and called it quits. Murcia went back to session work and played with numerous major artists - the Bee Gees, Joe Walsh, and Joe Cocker among them - who recorded in Miami.

NEWS - Hot Off The Press [USA power pop, pop 1974] 2010 Riverman Music, Yoga Records BTR0053, ycd003

Riverman Music reissues a unique '70s pop obscurity. The lead instrument is a pedal steel guitar, played with more imagination than anywhere other than the Misunderstood's studio recordings, often with some nice, fuzzy distortion. It rarely sounds "country." The songs are strong pop/rock, with Beach Boys-style harmony vocals on the softer songs, and tougher (but still melodic) singing on the rockers. Other than the opening "song" (three minutes of a guy fiddling with a radio dial), everything here is memorable, and no two songs sound alike. Highlights include the powerful "Loser," with a stunning steel guitar solo, and the long album-closer "New York City," but this is consistent enough that any given listener could feel equally strong about any two others. This is exactly the kind of band a daring major label executive would have struck gold with in the '60s, but nobody would dare to touch in the '70s. The endless streams of slide on these songs makes you almost woozy, but in that pleasant, A.M. radio, hot car/hot summer day, off-kilter '70s way. Surprisingly groovy. Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks.

HEAD - Head [USA garage psychedelic rock 1992] Voxx Records Voxx VCD 2061

Unfairly, this album has always remained obscure, even among Voxx releases. Perhaps this is due to their style, which is freeform and creative, rather than the formulaic approach audiences seem to prefer.

With influences ranging from Cream to Led Zep to little-known British bands like July, Head blew a lot of minds in Los Angeles in the early '90s with their light show and extended trip-jams.

For their album debut, they chose a different approach: using all the studio tricks at their command to make a finely-crafted collage of sounds designed to flow through a listener's most spaced-out headphone session. But this long album also includes most of their live freakout favorites, and there are frequent moments of sublime ensemble playing. Greg Shaw.
